HUT 2 HUT 2020 - ALTERNATIVE COURSE BRIEFING

It’s on! Yes, Oscars 100 Hut 2 Hut has a greenlight, albeit in a slightly changed format…

Currently, a lot of (but not all of) the Alpine National Park remains closed due to fire activity. None of the fire activity directly affects or threatens (under current conditions) the proposed Hut2Hut 100km or The Archie 55km courses.

There remains an operational command centre working on the Abberfeldy Fire zone, which while not threatening, is still a live situation well to the north east of the event zone. Further, there remains clean-up operations in play up at Bluff Hut, Lovicks Hut and other areas through which the 100km Hut 2 Hut passes.

Therefore, in cooperation with Parks Victoria and DEWLP managers, and with the safety of our participants paramount in all decision making, we will NOT be using the regular 100km Hut2Hut route. We will, however, have access to the original Archie’s 55km course, which has been deemed safe by park management.

Therefore, the 2020 Oscars 100 Hut 2 Hut and The Archie WILL GO AHEAD as planned with requisite alterations to some run logistics / distances etc.

This course will result in:

  • a slight INCREASE in distance (from 101km to 105km)
  • a DECREASE in the amount of ascent (and overall technicality / brutal-ness) from 5800m to 4433m
  • Overall a slightly easier course on paper, however the mental game of doing two laps will be every bit as challenging.

The basic set up will be:

  • All 100km participants will do two laps of The Archie course
  • Solo 100km participants will complete two laps in under the original cut off time and similar pacing required for CP cut offs.
  • Two day participants have two options (1) a short day and then a long day OR (2) a long day and then a short day. Both options have you staying at Pikes Flat, regardless of which combination.
  • Three day participants run a shorter day, followed by a longer day, and then another shorter day. Both nights camping at Pikes Flat.

THE INFORMATION BELOW REPLACES ONLY THE COURSE-SPECIFIC INFORMATION IN THE OLD HUT 2 HUT HANDBOOK.

DOWNLOAD NEW HUT 2 HUT HANDBOOK HERE

However, you still need to read the handbook and take in all the other important information regards EVENT SCHEDULE, MANDATORY GEAR etc, which all remains the same.

There is still accommodation available on mountain. See HERE.

We understand that some may be disappointed in not being able to experience the full Hut 2 Hut course, up high on the ridge lines - however we put participant safety at the centre of all decision making, and have done our utmost to provide an alternative experience *that will still challenge you*, in place of not being able to use the original course. We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. And of course, there's always next year... come back and get your alpine high then.

*these files show the single lap 'Archie'. Hut 2 Hut 100 participants need to remember that in doing two laps, you MUST SUMMIT BULLER at the end of your first lap (so you will summit three times over the course of the distance). When you come off the summit at the end of your first lap, turn off back runner right (south) down to the Four Mile drop in (i.e. do not follow route back to the Village finish, until after summiting the third time, post second lap).

FAQS

Why the new course? Unfortunately, due to the recent fire activity and resultant requirement for restorative work up on the high part of the original Oscars 100 Hut 2 Hut course, this year we cannot access that part of the course as it remains closed. We have, however, been given permission (and assurances of safety) to use all of the planned Archies 55km loop course. Hence, with all the preparations in place, we have decided to run the now-105km Oscars 100 Hut 2 Hut on that course in two laps.

Will the original course be reinstated next year? Yes, all being well regards restorative works around Lovicks and Bluff Huts and associated trails, we plan to return to the original Hut2Hut course next year.

I'm not sure I'm up for the lap course - can I get a refund of a credit for next year? No. Unfortunately, with how events are organised, most of your entry fee has already been spent on logistics and materials. As per conditions of entry, agreed by you upon sign up, management reserves the right to alter the course should it be deemed necessary for any reason, but specifically to ensure participant safety - which this is! We believe in offering you a replacement course, that you can still get out there, have fun, raise money and awareness for autism, and be part of the great community that is Oscars 100.

As a two/three day participant - I was supposed to be camping at two different locations - what are camp logistics now? All campers will stay at Pikes Flat - a stunning pasture patch alongside the Howqua River in the middle of the wilderness.

If you are a one-night camper - you will arrive at Pikes after doing a long day or a short day *(depending which approach to covering the 100km in two days you take). You will then set camp, stay overnight, pack up the following morning and set off to complete the course.

If you are a two night camper, you will set camp first night, and simply leave your tent up to arrive back to for the second night.

As per usual logistics, all tents will be collected at rego, and transported to and from Pikes Flat for you.

All regular rules and conditions apply as per normal regards the allowable size of your tent and drop bag to be transported to the campsite. See the original Event Handbook for that.

Does all the same mandatory gear requirements apply given two lap course? Yes.

Even if I am a super fast, self sufficient, confident speedster doing the solo - I mean, a bivvie? Yes.

Noting that the course does not pass through the village gong through Buller Resort - can I nip off course and get a cup of coffee? No. But you may wait at the aid station and get one of your support crew or one of our event volunteers to go get you one or other supplies. At your own cost!
